Curious introduction to the Holy Writ, opposing the obscurities of the Bible against simplistic interpretations of the Lutherans. The Italian Dominican Ambrosius Catharinus, or by his real name Lancelotto Politi (ca. 1484-1553), was a leading theologian at the beginning of the Council of Trent and a strong opponent of Erasmus whom he considered a prominent source of Protestant heresies. The work is dedicated to the French King Francis I. Woodcut historiated initials. Woodcut marks on title and in a larger version on q8v.
