Old half sheep, marbl. paper on boards, gilt flat spine (sl. rubbed), red leather title label. Very good copy.

Rare edition (1st 1671) of this travel report describing the Arctic coasts of Europe by P.-M. de La Martinière (1634-1690), French physician, surgeon and explorer. Engr. ill.: front. and 17 full-page plates, being curious illustrations depicting indigenous people and their costume, miners, hunters on skis, the palace of the Russian patriarch, Samoyeds, narwhal hunting near Novaya Zemlya, travel by reindeer sled in Lapland, natives worshipping a diabolical wooden idol, mushrooms and birds, human unicorns, etc. In 1670, La Martinière was enlisted as a surgeon on a naval exploration trip supported by King Frederick III of Denmark and thus had the opportunity to wander along the coasts of Norway, Lapland, northern Russia, Novaya Zemlya, Greenland and Iceland for a period of five months. This is the first published travel report written by a Frenchman describing these regions. Title in red and black. At the end of the vol. 3 stocklists (of which 2 with printed sheet music) of Estienne Roger (1665-1722), famous Huguenot printer who fled France, bookseller and publisher of musical scores in Amsterdam.
