Lot description
4 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [front.-12]-320, 447-[4] pp. (damp stains, an occasional tear).
Contemp. vellum (a bit soiled).
3rd edition (1st: 1644, 2nd: 1644-45) by the Dutch poet and playwright J. H. Krul (1601-1646). These collected works include enlarged versions of his emblem books "Minne-spiegel ter deughden" (1639) and "Minne-beelden" (1634). Engr. ill.: front. and 92 ill. in text. including many emblems and, on p. 11, the famous print, longtime ascribed to Rembrandt, but now commonly attributed to Ferdinand Bol. The 4 chapters deal with the core human drives, love, worldly power and youth. Accordingly, the frontispiece shows a loving couple, a money-changer, the vanquished war god Mars and a music teacher around the apple of the world.
