Lot description

Amsterdam, Sumptibus Societatis, 1723

2 vol., 4to: [28]-484-[8], [12]-107 pp.; 3 pl. (damp stain in upper corner, stamp removed on t.p.).

Contemp. calf, gilt decorated spine with 5 bands (head- and tailband damaged).

Rare reprint of the 2nd Amsterdam ed. of Newton's authoritative "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy" (1st ed.: London, 1687), probably the most influential scientific publication of the 17th c. The "Principia", as the work is often referred to, states Newton's laws of motion, forming the foundation of classical mechanics, his law of universal gravitation, and a derivation of Kepler's laws of planetary motion. His mathematical methods are now included in the field of calculus, but the language of calculus as we know it was largely absent from the Principia. This edition includes on p.481 of the "Philosophia naturalis" the "General Scholium" added to the 2nd ed. (1713) wherein Newton used what became his famous expression: "Hypotheses non fingo" ("I formulate no hypotheses"). With an introduction by E. Halley and a preface by R. Cotes attacking Cartesian philosophy. It is the only reprint that contains the Quantitatum Analysis Series.
