Folio: [42]-407-[1 bl.-12] pp. (toned, some minor soiling).

Contemp. panelled calf, spine with 5 raised bands (rubbed, rebacked, mod. endpapers). Good copy.

Third ed. of the famous essay on epistemology (the theory of knowledge) by the English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704), 1st publ. 1690. It marks the beginning of the modern Western conception of the self, and of modern psychology. Full-page engr. front. portrait by P. Vanderbanck after S. Brounower (printed name Locke removed and replaced in ms.). Title within double ruled border. Stocklist at the end.
