The painting depicts the scene from the Old Testament (Genesis, 42-43) where Joseph receives his half-brothers as Vizier of Egypt. In the background the sacks of his half-brothers which were filled with grain before they were sent back to Canaan. The scenes are set in a Late Medieval cityscape, surrounded by fortified walls and towers. The style is reminiscent of that of a small number French painters working during the late 1500s and early 1600s, such as Antoine Caron.
