Lot description
Leiden, Raphelengius, 1594
17 (of 100) engravings, 19 x 25 cm, laid paper (toned, some dampstaining, foxing, some tears).
In mod. folder with plastic protective sheet holders.
Scenes from the Old Testament from the album series "Imagines et Figurae Bibliorum", a richly illustrated Bible edition by the spiritual leader Henri Jansen Barefelt, first published by Jan Moretus in 1581. The series combined with the accompanying commentary was probably not produced until around 1592, after the death of Plantin, under the direction of Raphelengius in Leiden. Since Barefelt was not welcomed in the Spanish Catholic Netherlands, the album was published with a false date (1581) and false names given to the author and the printer (Renatus Christianus and Jacobus Villanus). The prints in our lot include the illustr. title plate with text, 3 in Latin, Dutch and French, scenes from Genesis (11 pl.), Exodus (1 pl.), Numbers (1 pl.), Judges (1 pl.) and Kings (2 pl.).
