Folio (some min. spotting at edges and margins of the last few ff.).

Orig. overl. publ. vellum (warping, a bit soiled), gilt stamped tool on front cover, gilt-titled flat spine, decor. endpapers, cardboard folder with purple cloth ties. Good copy.

First edition limited to 510 copies, ms. numbered and monogrammed by M. Lechter. One of 500 on hand-made paper (n. 219). Illustrated with 1 double-page title, 3 border decorations and 60 initials, all designed by Melchior Lechter (1865-1937), German painter and book illustrator. He founded the Einhorn Presse in 1909, of which the present volume is the first achievement. The Press printed richly decorated texts relating to the influential German poet Stefan George, Christianity and Indian philosophy. The German poet Friedrich Wolters (1876-1930) was one of the central figures of the literary group around George, the so-called "George-Kreis". "Herrschaft und Dienst" is an essay on the poetry and philosophy of Stefan George. Colophon and page numbers printed in red.
