Ca. 1927-1928

110 silver prints (5 loose), b/w (some sepia), average size (7,5 x 10,5 cm), glued (but reversible) on special paper, several captioned.

Red modern cardboard 4to ad hoc album.

Album of Jules Piquard (also written Picquard), "2nd class territorial administrator", originally from Herbeumont in Belgium, settled in Nouvelle-Anvers (Mankanza territory, between Kinshasa and Kisangani) but more especially in Rutshuru (North Kivu). In addition to family photos (ca. 50: children, including one with Congolese nannies, cruises, friends...), the photos show regions or villages (Tipoye, Lake Kivu...)), bush scenes, many photos of animals captured (baby elephant, lion cub, pelican) or killed (leopard, lioness, elephant, crocodile, hippopotamus, antelope, open-bellied snake with a goat), a termite mound, buffaloes at the foot of Mount N'Goma.... Daily scenes or particular people: male carriers, brick making, instruments (hoes, baskets, earthenware pots), Loulenga archers, circumcision ceremony, braided or partially shaved heads, "N'kumu" (lead citizen at n'Gombé), the Tutsi king Musinga [i.e. Yuhi V, one of the last Rwandan sovereigns], the Hutu Mwami Daniel Ndeze Rugabo II (1885-1980), king of Rutshuru (incl. 1 photo in 1958, 2 of his warriors and soldiers + 2 photos during his visit to Belgium in 1958 to the Piquard family).
With some newspaper cutting glued at the end of the album and a certification letter concerning the gift of a gold nugget.
