6 parts in 2 vol., folio (some foxing and sl. browning, last ff. of vol. I dampstained in blank marg., little wormtrack in the blank margin of the first ff. of vol. II and flyleave and half-title sl. folded).

Contemp. marbled calf, gilt orn. spines with raised bands and labels, red edges (covers rubbed, head of vol. II sl. torn and little wormtrack in upper pastedown).

Later ed. (1st 1700) of the main work of Zeghert Bernhard van Espen (1646-1728), Leuven Professor of Canon law and defender of Gallican theories. It still is a basic text for our understanding of the workings of the Catholic Church in 17th-18th-c. Europe, dealing with all aspects of the duties of the clergy. Complete copy: Pt. I discusses the status of members of the clergy ("De Personis"); Pt. II is dedicated to the sacraments; Pt. III gives a detailed account of crimes commited by members of the clergy; Pt. IV is a large-scale commentary on canon law; Pt. V gives an historical survey of canon law; Pt. VI is a supplement. Text in 2 col. and first titles of vol. I & II printed in black and red.
