Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., 4to: iii-[1-1 bl.]-37, [1-1 bl.]-29 pp.; 38 pl. (some min. offsetting, a few pl. with some min. spotting or soiling).

Contemp. three-quarter roseate morocco (corners sl. rubbed, sl. faded), gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands (sl. faded), marbled endpapers, top edge gilt.

First edition. Fine selection of the rose cultivars or hybrids available through a commercial nursery. Ill. with 2 lithogr. titles printed in gold and 38 hand-coloured lithogr. pl. by Henry Curtis (ca. 1819-1889). He was proprietor of the West of England Roseries, Moorend, Bristol and a nursery at Westbury-on-Trym. Curtis draws the plates from examples in his own nurseries and gives practival advice on their cultivation based on his own experiences.
