Lot description

Engr., 47 x 57 cm, hand-colouring (small margins, sm. tear on central folding).

Loose sheet.

Very decorative carte-a-figures of Brabant engraved by Abraham Goos, with ornamental border etched in C.J. Visscher's workshop and 8 lines of Latin in lower cartouche. The imprint has Claes Jansz. Visscher's name, but the date in the cartouche has been altered into 1657 and the map was published by his son Nicolas. Sm. town views of Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp, 's Hertogenbosch, Tienen, Bergen op Zoom, Lier, Helmond, Breda and Mechelen in top and lower borders. In the left and right corners medallions of Albert VII, Archduke of Austria, and his wife, Isabella Clara Eugenia of Austria, both sovereigns of the Habsburg Netherlands between 1598 and 1621. Costume figures representing the various residents of Mechelen: nobles, merchants, farmers etc.
