Oblong 4to: title-18 pl. (some spotting).

Green quarter cloth, shagreen boards. Good copy.

Rare album complete with 18 phototypes by J. Maes showing the destruction caused by the explosion of the Antwerp ammunition factory Corvilain (the so-called "Kardoezenwerkhuis") situated near present-day Kattendijkdok-West. The death toll of the disaster at the factory, employing mostly young boys and girls: 95 deaths and 63 missing. The album shows the column of smoke rising from the explosion and the enormous fire of the 45,000 barrels of petrol in the adjacent petroleum hangars, the destroyed factory and surrounding buildings, the completely demolished village of Austruweel, the ruins of the tavern "Het Congoland", and orphans and other survivors in front of their destroyed homes.
